YouTube Monetization Requirements in 2026: What Beginners Need to Know
Last checked: 11 October 2026. This guide uses YouTube’s own help page on the expanded Partner Program and 2026 creator guides. YouTube can change its thresholds, so confirm your own eligibility in YouTube Studio, in the Earn area, before you plan around any number.
Monetization on YouTube is not one switch. It is a ladder with two main steps, and there is a deadline coming that makes the second step harder for new channels. If you are a beginner in Nigeria, understanding the steps now helps you decide how much time you have and what to focus on. This guide explains the two levels, the account requirements, what the numbers mean in real viewing and a practical plan for the months ahead.
Good news first: Nigeria is on YouTube’s eligible list
YouTube’s help page on the expanded YouTube Partner Program (YPP) lists the countries where the earlier-access tier is available, and Nigeria is one of them. That means a channel based in Nigeria can use the expanded programme if it meets the thresholds. The same page says that if you are not eligible yet, you can choose to be notified in the Earn area of YouTube Studio.
The two levels
Level 1: Earlier access (fan funding and shopping)
Under the expanded programme, creators in eligible countries can join with a lower bar. A 2026 guide from vidIQ describes it as 500 subscribers, three public uploads and either 3,000 valid public watch hours or 3 million valid public Shorts views. At this level you do not earn ad revenue. You can earn through features such as fan gifts during live streams, memberships and shopping, if you meet each feature’s own conditions.
Level 2: Full access (ads and Premium revenue)
For ad revenue and a share of YouTube Premium revenue, YouTube’s help page gives two routes. You need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Only public videos count, and guides note that hours come from long-form videos and live streams, not Shorts.
The change coming on 1 February 2027
Reports covered in our earlier article say the full-access bar will double for new applicants from 1 February 2027: 8,000 watch hours in the past 12 months or 20 million Shorts views in the past 90 days, with the 1,000-subscriber requirement unchanged. The vidIQ guide repeats this. If this applies to you, a channel that reaches 4,000 hours before that date has the lower bar, so the next few months matter. Confirm the details in YouTube Studio, because YouTube can adjust dates.

Account requirements beyond the numbers
Creator guides in 2026 list several conditions that are easy to overlook:
- 2-Step Verification must be turned on for your Google account.
- Your channel must have no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- You need one active AdSense account linked to your channel to be paid. Our guide on how and when AdSense pays explains the PIN and payment steps.
- Your content must meet YouTube’s originality rules. Mass-produced or repetitive videos are not eligible, as we explain in our article on the “inauthentic content” rule.
What 4,000 hours means in real views
4,000 hours equals 240,000 minutes. If viewers watch an average of four minutes per video, you need about 60,000 views. At two minutes, you need about 120,000 views. Under the doubled bar, the same four-minute average would need about 120,000 views. These are illustrations, but they show why average view duration matters as much as view count. A video that holds viewers longer gives you more hours from the same audience.
A practical plan for a new channel
- Choose one topic and one audience. A narrow channel builds repeat viewers who watch more of your videos.
- Check your Earn tab today. Note your current subscribers and hours so you can measure progress.
- Decide your route. If your videos are long and explanatory, aim for watch hours. If you make fast, short clips, check whether the Shorts view target is realistic before relying on it.
- Improve retention. Strong openings, clear structure and removing filler help viewers stay.
- Publish on a steady schedule you can keep. Consistency beats bursts followed by silence.
- Make income that does not depend on the Partner Program. Services, sponsorships and products can pay earlier than ads.
Mistakes that cost creators their eligibility
- Buying subscribers or views. Artificial activity does not count and can put a channel at risk.
- Subscribing-for-subscribers exchanges that bring people who never watch.
- Re-uploading other people’s videos without real added value.
- Ignoring a strike notice. Resolve problems before applying.
- Paying someone to “unlock monetization”. Only the official Earn area in YouTube Studio can grant it.
What we could not confirm
- The final details of the February 2027 change, since the date is still months away and YouTube can adjust it.
- How long applications take to be reviewed, which varies by channel.
- Typical earnings per 1,000 views. Guides give wide, unreliable ranges, so I give no figure.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need 1,000 subscribers before I can earn anything? Not necessarily. The earlier-access tier starts at 500 subscribers, but it does not include ad revenue.
Do Shorts watch hours count toward the 4,000 hours? According to creator guides, no. Shorts have their own view-based route.
Can I apply before I meet every number? The Earn tab shows when you are eligible and lets you ask to be notified.
Key takeaways
Nigeria is on YouTube’s list for the expanded programme. Earlier access starts around 500 subscribers, while ads need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, and the bar is reported to double on 1 February 2027. Check your Earn tab, protect your account with 2-Step Verification, link AdSense and focus on videos people finish watching.
