Last checked: 13 October 2026. This is a beginner’s explanation of how to read a share price, not financial advice. The BUA Cement figures shown are examples taken from data sites, which sometimes disagree, so confirm the live price with your broker or the NGX.

A share price looks like a single number, but it tells you more when you understand what sits behind it. This guide uses BUA Cement (ticker BUACEMENT) to show how to read a price, how it connects to the size of the company and why different websites can show different figures.

What the price means

The price is simply what the most recent buyer and seller agreed to on the Nigerian Exchange, quoted in naira per share. It is not a measure of how “good” a company is. A share at ₦1,000 is not automatically better than one at ₦300, because the number of shares in issue differs from one company to another.

From share price to market value

Market capitalisation is the share price multiplied by the number of shares. BUA Cement has roughly 33.9 billion shares. At a price of ₦297, the market value works out to about ₦10 trillion, which matches the figure one data site reported for the end of September 2026. That is how the same stock can be described as “₦297” and “₦10 trillion” at once.

How BUA Cement’s price has moved

  • Start of 2026: about ₦178.50, according to one data site.
  • 19 May 2026: an all-time high of ₦460 on the same site.
  • Late July 2026: around ₦325 after the half-year results, according to Nairametrics.
  • 30 September 2026: about ₦297.
  • Past 52 weeks: roughly ₦151 to ₦460.

The lesson is that a share can gain a great deal and then give some back within months. A price near ₦297 is well above the start of the year but about 35% below the May peak.

Numbers to read alongside the price

Earnings per share (EPS). BUA Cement reported EPS of ₦9.59 for the first six months of 2026. Doubling it to get a rough full-year figure gives about ₦19, which is crude because profits are not evenly spread. At ₦297, the price would then be roughly 15 times earnings. This price-to-earnings ratio says how many years of current profit the price represents.

Dividend yield. The company paid ₦10 per share for 2025. Against ₦297, that is about 3.4%.

Book value. One data site lists book value per share near ₦19.5. If correct, the price is roughly 15 times book value, which shows that investors are paying well above the accounting value of the assets. Treat this as a prompt for questions, not a conclusion.

Bid, ask and volume

Besides the last price, brokers show the bid, which is the highest price a buyer currently offers, and the ask, which is the lowest price a seller wants. In thinly traded stocks the gap between them can be wide, and the last price may be stale. Volume tells you how many shares changed hands. If volume is small, the last price may say little about what you could get today.

Why websites disagree

When I checked, BUA Cement appeared at about ₦285 to ₦309 on different pages, and some pages still showed prices from May or June. Even the company’s own investor page showed no share price on 11 October. Some sites update with a delay, and others are not refreshed at all. Always look at the date and time beside the quote, and prefer your broker’s live screen or the NGX.

A simple routine for checking any quote

  1. Note the date and time next to the price.
  2. Look at the volume and the gap between bid and ask.
  3. Compare two sources, and trust your broker’s screen over a news site.
  4. Read the latest results before reacting to a move.

Daily price limits

The exchange limits how far a stock can move in a single day. As far as I know the limit has been 10% in either direction, but check the current NGX rule, since it can change.

What we could not confirm

  • The exact price at the time you read this.
  • The current daily movement limit.
  • Book value per share, which comes from one data site and should be verified in the company’s balance sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is a low share price cheaper? No. Compare valuation measures such as price-to-earnings, not the raw price.

What is the highest BUA Cement has traded? One data site shows ₦460 on 19 May 2026.

Where do I find the live price? On your broker’s platform or the NGX website.

Key takeaways

A share price is only one number. Pair it with market value, earnings, dividends and trading volume, check the date on every quote and expect big swings in a stock that trades thinly.

A share price is only one part of the story when evaluating a company on the stock market. A stock trading at ₦20 is not automatically cheaper or better than one trading at ₦200. To understand its real value, investors should examine several important factors before making a decision.
Market capitalisation shows the total market value of a company’s outstanding shares. It helps investors compare companies of different sizes. A low share price does not necessarily mean a company is undervalued, especially when it has a large number of shares in circulation.
Earnings reveal whether the business is making money. Investors can review profit after tax, earnings per share and the company’s earnings history to understand whether its performance is improving or deteriorating.
Dividends matter to investors seeking regular income. However, a company that paid dividends in previous years may reduce or suspend them if profits or available cash decline. Past payments should never be treated as guaranteed future income.
Trading volume is another important consideration. It indicates how actively a stock is being bought and sold. Shares with low trading volume can be difficult to sell quickly, and a relatively small order may cause a significant price movement.
Finally, always check the date and source of a stock quote. Prices can change during the trading session, and delayed figures may no longer reflect current market conditions.
Successful investing requires more than chasing a low price. Compare valuation, business performance, dividend sustainability and liquidity before deciding whether a stock deserves a place in your portfolio.
